We had thought about adoption early on in our relationship, even discussing it before we got married. A few years after we had Maia, we tried foster parenting through our local children’s services agency. We learned that this route might be the quickest way for us to adopt, as we might foster a child who could potentially become a crown ward and then be eligible for adoption. After a year, we quickly realized this was not going to happen anytime soon. We had our names on the list for adoption with our local child and family services during our 20s but knew that young children who became available for adoption were rare. An update on Raising the Goddess of Spring

  Where are we at?  I thought it was about time I let everyone in on our progress towards publishing our book. We have chosen to self-publish. After thinking about the benefits of maintaining control of our rights and really just wanting to put this out, and after a huge learning curve on my part, we have chosen to go with Amazon (Kindle Direct Publishing). I spent most of my Christmas holidays preparing the index, and really, except for the cover work, that was the last major task to complete. We are days away from uploading the draft along with the cover and ordering a physical proof copy to ensure everything looks perfect before we go live. A few weeks maybe? Can I believe we are here now?  No...considering that we starting planning this book in 2010! A lot of thought, research, interviews and soul have gone into our 312 pages, 19 chapter guidebook for families raising children with rare disorders. I think I have gone over it a million times. Breaking News!

Maia the Goddess of Spring is 25 Maia has a rare chromosome disorder called Emanuel Syndrome. She was supposed to have a huge party on March 21, 2020.  The whole community was coming to celebrate her important milestone.  We were going to share with the world how Maia had beaten the odds and  lived a million more moments than she was given when she was diagnosed in 1995.  Your poor messed up child, Mrs. St-Pierre.  Take her home and love her, because she's not going to see five.  That's what I heard. Then just before her 25th birthday, COVID-19 happened.  The world shut down. We were not able to celebrate.  The hall was cancelled. The cake and balloons were cancelled.  As she lives in a group home with other vulnerable people,  our in-person touching visits have been cancelled. I haven't held my daughter since. But you know what? Screw that.  My daughter is TWENTY-FIVE  and that is a party that can outlast this pandemic.  ...
